All three University of Michigan campuses moved to a new emergency alert notification system this weekend.

To help increase reliability, communication send time, reporting, and ease of use, U-M selected the Rave Alert platform.

In order to help accelerate the delivery of important emergency notifications, a secondary system has been added so that — when needed — emergency messages can be simultaneously posted to the university website, social media channels, desk and laptops, and digital message boards.

Faculty, staff and student contact information was pulled from the old system, Wolverine Access or ��-Dearborn Connect (for students). Students, faculty and staff are asked to verify their mobile number is correct in the system by Friday, Oct. 23.

��-Dearborn students, faculty and staff must sign into the network and accept the Rave Alert terms and conditions before verifying their information.

“One of the most important safety measures members of the ��-Dearborn community can take today is ensuring that they will receive an alert when there’s an emergency on campus,” says Emergency Management Director Laura Drabczyk.

While verifying your mobile number, students, faculty and staff can also add additional phone numbers in the system and enroll to receive alerts from any U-M campus.

The ��-Dearborn Emergency Alert is an urgent, mass notification system that keeps students, faculty and staff informed about major active emergencies on campus. The university uses the system to provide timely and accurate information that empowers members of the campus community to make critical decisions about their safety during an emergency.

Other ways to stay informed during an emergency? Twitter, Facebook, the ��-Dearborn homepage and ��-Dearborn digital displays across campus will share emergency information.

As the world navigates the coronavirus pandemic, University of Michigan-Dearborn recognizes that current and prospective students are facing unprecedented challenges and new realities. In order to support students and help them prepare for success today and in the future, the university has modified some policies to make the admissions and registration process easier.

“At ��-Dearborn, our students always come first. In response to the pandemic, we quickly transitioned to remote instruction of classes to allow our students to still graduate on time, provided a pass/fail grading option for winter 2020 courses, and eased the summer registration process to help those coping with this crisis. Our commitment to providing our students with every opportunity remains unwavering,” said Susan E. Alcock, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Test Optional for Fall 2021

Understanding that the standardized testing cycle has been disrupted by the pandemic, the university has temporarily suspended this requirement for Fall 2021 applicants. These students are encouraged to provide test scores, if they are able, but they will not be required for admission.

��-Dearborn is also working with Fall 2020 applicants who have already provided scores and were planning to retest, and working with those that have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and have demonstrated academic success through specific coursework.

“We understand what a challenging time this is for high school students and are working to be supportive and flexible,” said Melissa Stone, vice provost for enrollment management.

Accepting Additional Transfer Credits

The university also is making accommodations for transfer students, recognizing that the abrupt transition to online education they experienced was likely challenging. ��-Dearborn will accept all courses that were offered online as long as they are posted on the transcript. Courses taken in the Winter 2020 semester, if otherwise transferrable, will be granted credit if the grade is deemed as Pass/Satisfactory from transferring institutions. These courses, if applicable, will fulfill general education and degree requirements.

New Emergency Student Grant Funding Available

The university is also identifying ways to assist students with financial challenges due to the coronavirus. Under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, students now have access to additional emergency grant funding for related expenses, including food, housing, course materials, technology, health care and child care. The university aims to assist as many students as possible in meeting their emergency financial needs during this challenging time. All students are eligible if they have a valid FAFSA (there is still time to file) and were enrolled in a program that met on-campus prior to the transition to remote delivery due to COVID-19. Eligible students should complete the application for COVID-19 emergency assistance. Under these guidelines, international students and students enrolled exclusively in an online program are not eligible to receive funding but can still apply to our Student Immediate Relief Fund.

Reducing fees for Summer 2020 Registration

In recognition of the decreased campus services provided during remote instruction, such as parking, Wellness Center access, food service, the university has reduced the summer registration fee by $100 for each session and has removed all course (lab) fees.

Planning for Fall

Guided by the recommendations of the State of Michigan, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, public health professionals and our University of Michigan colleagues, ��-Dearborn leadership is working on planning for various teaching scenarios for the fall term. All decisions in this area will be guided by two principles: The health and safety of our campus community and our commitment to continuing to offer our students an education and experience worthy of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The university expects to communicate more information regarding fall plans by June 30.

While the campus community is focused on taking the necessary steps to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, it’s also important to remember spring weather safety. Severe Weather Awareness Week in Michigan is this week and it marks the approach of the state’s most unpredictable weather season, which is a good time to review plans in the event of inclement weather.

Recently, ��-Dearborn joined 284 other universities in the country with the StormReady certification from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS). NWS is the primary source of weather data, forecasts and warnings for the United States and its territories.

StormReady universities are recognized because they are prepared to save lives from the onslaught of severe weather through advanced planning, education and awareness.

To be recognized as StormReady, a site must:

establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center
have more than one way to receive severe weather forecasts and warnings and to alert the public
create a system that monitors local weather conditions
promote the importance of public readiness through multiple outreach efforts
develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises

According to NWS, Michigan experiences an average of 15 tornadoes a year. Although the greatest number occur between April and August, they can happen at any time.

��-Dearborn’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has tips for the campus community to prepare for and respond to various weather situations.

Sign up for ��-Dearborn Emergency Alerts. Messages are delivered when NWS issues a warning for a tornado or for winds of 75 mph or greater in Wayne County.
Know the difference between a storm "watch" and a storm '"warning." A "watch" means severe weather is possible. A "warning" means that severe weather -such as a thunderstorm or tornado- is occurring or is about to. When a warning has been issued, find shelter immediately.

If you are outdoors and see lightning, hear thunder or outdoor warning sirens, seek shelter immediately inside a sturdy building or vehicle. Monitor local media for official information.
The safest place to shelter is in an interior area on the lowest level of a building away from windows, doors and outside walls.

University of Michigan-Dearborn leadership has been working closely with University of Michigan executive officers and health professionals to closely monitor the rapidly changing novel coronavirus developments, and we are making a number of recommendations — from future travel precautions to illness prevention — to promote a safe and healthy environment for our community.

At this time, the university is proceeding with most scheduled events, classes and operations, including athletic events. Please note that the situation can change quickly, and updates will be on the ��-Dearborn COVID-19 information page.

Important COVID-19 updates:

At this time, there have been no cases diagnosed in Michigan. New cases continue to be identified in the United States and abroad.
If you are sick, stay home from class or work. We ask faculty and managers to accommodate students and employees who stay home while sick. If faculty have questions about student accommodations, please contact the Office of the Provost.
If you feel sick, please call your primary care doctor for next steps.
If you have traveled to China, South Korea, Italy or Iran, stay home and self-isolate (tips listed below) and monitor your health for 14 days from your last day in that country, per guidance from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Register international travel using U-M Travel Registry.

Illness prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends several everyday preventive actions that individuals can take to help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses:

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Wash your hands as if you just chopped jalapeño peppers and you need to remove your contact lenses.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, and immediately throw the tissue in the trash and clean hands with sanitizer.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Clean and disinfect frequently used objects and surfaces.
Stay at home when you are sick.
Use alternatives to shaking hands or hugging.
