The 2023-24 academic year kicked off on Friday with more than 1,000 incoming students getting their first real taste of campus life at the university. The group consisted of first-year, transfer and graduate students.

On the field outside of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters Building, students attended Wolverine Welcome, where they were greeted by campus leaders, learned ��-Dearborn traditions and sang their first round of The Victors as a Wolverine.

While speaking to the crowd, Dean of Students Amy Finley acknowledged how much they had already accomplished to get to this point and how Friday was the start of something new.

“Today is the day where you start to feel transformed. Today is the day where you start reaching for the stars, for your dreams. Today is the day where you start figuring out who you are and what YOU are going to do to help transform our world. Today you truly become a part of our ��-Dearborn community,” she said.

Following the brief speeches, upper-level students presented the incoming group with maize and blue keys, a campus tradition officially welcoming them to their new home.

After an opportunity to explore campus, students finished the day with the Go Blue Bash, which featured outdoor games, carnival food and a DJ. Over 80 student organizations and 40 departments came out to introduce the new Dearborn Wolverines to the many ways to get involved at the university.

New student Kiylee Grinnell transferred to ��-Dearborn from the Flint campus for the 4+1 Applied Behavioral Analysis Accelerated Program.

“When everyone was gathered together and we got to actually meet and talk to people, that’s what I liked most about it,” she said, reflecting on the day. With the start of the new academic year, Grinnell says she’s most looking forward to starting her new program, one that she’s passionate about and is specific to her career goals.

First-year student Kayla Winston comes to ��-Dearborn directly from high school for the university’s electrical engineering program. She found Wolverine Welcome Day to be a fun way to meet new people and find out about clubs and opportunities at the University of Michigan Dearborn.

“I had no idea any of this was here before and this day was a really good way for me to learn about it,” she said.

More than 2,300 ��-Dearborn students were hailed at the 16th Annual New Student Convocation. The new faces to campus were from around the world, representing five continents; their ages spanned generations, 16 to 77.

They came together Sept. 4 as first-time Wolverines in the Fieldhouse.

“Today’s ceremony marks the official beginning of your lives as Michigan students within the Michigan family. And it is particularly special for me because we are beginning this journey together,” said Chancellor Domenico Grasso, who became the sixth ��-Dearborn chancellor on Aug. 1. “Being a proud Michigan alum, I’m returning home. And, like me, you couldn't have picked a better place to call home.”

From the maize and blue floral arrangements to the staging area with ��-seal stamped podium, students and their families were surrounded by pomp and circumstance.

And that's thanks to the many staff members who worked behind the scenes prior to the ceremony. For almost a week nearly 30 people had a hand in transforming the game-time space into a location for a proper wolverine welcome.

And their work was noticed by the many in attendance at Convocation. ��-Dearborn parent Elizabeth O’Connor—whose stepson Brandon O'Connor and son Alexander Thornton are in the fall 2018 freshman class—had her phone out to snap photos and send text messages to family to include them in on the day’s festivities.

O'Connor said she was impressed with what she saw and heard at Convocation and felt confident about their college choice.

“The ceremony, the speakers and the space — everything was very nice today,” she said. "I'm glad I was able be here today to learn more about ��-Dearborn and how this campus will prepare them for what the future brings."

But before the Michigan family could sing The Victors, someone had to set the stage. Here are a few of the people who make New Student Convocation happen.

Senior Marc Casey, Fieldhouse recreational assistant, and a crew of students placed thousands of carpet squares—he estimates 3,000—on the floor to add a feeling of warmth to the space and protect the wooden basketball court.

The 30-foot tall blue draperies are hung by staff lowering a mechanical bar and attaching the curtains; the staging is made of six separate pieces that workers set up and then crawl underneath to lock in place.

A day after the carpet squares and stage were set up, Larry Arpi, left, and Winston Cannon in Maintenance Services secure the maize rugs on the stage; the staff said the large rugs had enough time to rest and flatten.

These chairs appeared overnight thanks to the night facilities crew. To make sure the chairs were in a straight line, the crew used duct tape and string on the carpet squares. They then zip-tied the chairs together for even spacing and to assure compliance with fire codes.

The seal-stamped podium, which weighs 200 pounds, is taken from its protective case and lifted onto the stage. “When we bring it out and wheel it around, people look at us like we’ve got the Stanley Cup,” said Rob Sharkus in Maintenance Services.

Maintenance Services' Mike Gibson set up the podium’s lighting and motorized adjustable mechanism. After he was done, Television Engineer Greg Taylor hooked up the sound system.

Getting close to the end of set up, staff members work on finishing touches like stage skirting, stair dusting and vacuuming.

Done every three years, Larry Arpi takes time to paint the two stage stairways to touch-up any visible wear.

As a financial analyst and economic expert, Emily Kolinski Morris uses her expertise to research data and spot trends for future forecasting at Ford Motor Co. But, when it comes to understanding success on a personal level, the chief economist occasionally looks to the past.

And with her keynote addresses during Saturday’s ��-Dearborn commencement ceremonies she encouraged the 700 plus graduates to do the same.

“Years from now when you think about your commencement, you probably won’t remember who spoke or what was said. But what I think you’ll remember, without even trying, are the people who helped you get here and how they made you feel. Those feelings are not just from the big days or special occasions; they are built up from hundreds of shared moments,” said Kolinski Morris (’90 B.A.). “I wish you great success on the road ahead. And when you look back on that road, you will see it was paved with those precious every day moments.”

Maize and blue pride filled the Fieldhouse as Chancellor Domenico Grasso presided over his first commencement and encouraged graduates to locate their family and friends for a moment of appreciation.

“Our graduates are deeply mindful of the gratitude that they owe to the loved ones who have supported and encouraged them and have made this day a reality,” he said. “And to the parents, I can only say that as a father of four, I think I know how you feel. The much-awaited day has finally come. You are a little sad, a little relived, a little wonderstruck, maybe a little poorer, and very, very proud.”

Speaking to the graduates, Grasso said course-lesson specifics like equations and memorized dates may fade, but the true value of their campus experience will become more apparent with time. He said the real benefit to a Michigan education is learning about the world and yourself through a broad lens of knowledge.

“The hallmark of a Michigan education is breadth. Your Michigan education is the key to the well-informed, creative and holistic thinking that the world so desperately needs.”

In Kolinski Morris’ keynote speeches, she shared wisdom gleaned from her field, giving two behavioral economic observations for the Class of 2018 to consider when making choices — No. 1. Present bias, which is making decisions today that are not in the best interest of future selves; No. 2. The relationship between individual choices and collective outcomes.

“Now that you’ve graduated, there’s nothing wrong with sitting down on a Saturday night and watching a sappy romance on the Hallmark Channel. Just don’t let that be all you do. Keep your present bias in mind and allocate some time each week to invest in things that bring personal growth and move you to your long-term goals,” Kolinski Morris said.

She said with the second observation — economists have realized that there are cases where individual self-interest doesn’t produce the best collective outcome, so it is important to be aware of choices made.

“Think about…the person who arrives late and walks right up to the airport gate right past everybody waiting patiently for boarding to begin,” she said. “It doesn’t take an economist to figure this one out: Just stop every once in awhile, consider your course of action and ask yourself, ‘what would the world look like if everyone did this?’”

The university hosted two ceremonies, the morning ceremony recognized graduates of the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the College of Business; the afternoon ceremony lauded graduates of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters and the College of Education, Health, and Human Services.

During the morning ceremony, Dina Shohatee, student speaker shared the importance of self-reflection and asking questions with her collegiate colleagues.

“Asking questions is very important because it allows us to get a clear idea of the world and concepts around us. In order to help the world, we need to understand what the issues are,” said Shohatee, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree in bioengineering.

Courtney Grove-Dyer, student speaker at the afternoon event, said she’s proud of her B.A. degree, but even more so of how the ��-Dearborn experience prepares students to be difference makers in their industries and communities. “We are addressing challenges to the region head-on through pioneering research, strategic partnerships and civic engagement. Our education and experiences have honed our ability to think outside of the box. We are innovators. And most importantly, we are leaders.”

After receiving their degrees, the new graduates were encouraged to keep investing in their campus community by Rand Beech (’09 B.B.A.) during the morning session and Gay Johnson (’17 B.A.) in the afternoon.

Faculty speakers Computer and Information Science Associate Professor Marouane Kessentini and Political Science Associate Professor Michael Rosano also advised the graduates during the ceremonies. Over the course of the two ceremonies, Grasso presented five students with the Chancellor’s Medallion in recognition of their strong academic record, quality of character, intellect and integrity:

“Many [have sung] this song, but — as Michigan alumni — you all own this song. Let’s sing loudly and proudly,” Grasso said. “Go Blue!”

Success in life is all about meaningful discovery.

That’s advice from a man who’d know: Winter Commencement speaker Tony England was the youngest NASA astronaut selected when joining the Apollo missions.

Using a multimedia presentation — clips from a 1970 NASA press conference and the Academy Award-winning Apollo 13 — England, ��-Dearborn’s College of Engineering and Computer Science dean, was introduced by ��-Dearborn Chancellor Domenico Grasso.

“On a fateful day in 1970, Tony England was called upon to use all his education, creativity, and native abilities. [In Apollo 13] Tom Hanks uttered the most famous lines in movie history, ‘Houston, we have a problem’," Grasso said. "That’s when our own Tony England sprung into action. He's a major part of the team who designed and help implement…what saved the Apollo 13 crew.”

But England spoke about more than his NASA experiences and exploring the final frontier; he was speaking to graduates about the possibilities in front of them as new ��-Dearborn graduates.

“The Apollo grand challenge not only yielded new technologies and a new understanding of the moon and, by inference, the planets, it showed that we humans could organize to achieve great things. ‘If we can go to moon, we can …’ You fill in the blank,” England said to the enthusiastic audience at Crisler Center. “I hope the aspirations of some of you include the blank of addressing today’s grand challenges of reversing climate warming, and overcoming the reemerging tribalism that threatens democracy and world peace.”

Listening to England share his experiences of going from a small-town high school — as a running back on his school’s football team, he once marched in the band at halftime — to NASA, the 1115 new alumni were given three keys to success when pursuing your goals: Confidence, value alignment and a strategy.

“For me, my NASA experiences and academia have allowed me to pursue my passions for adventure, discovery and teaching. Your degree will enable access to a satisfying career, but you need a plan.”

England, one of the first scientist astronauts, said he had to prove himself to Rear Admiral Alan Shepard — the first American in space — because only military men had involvement with the space program prior to their arrival. He said the astronaut office viewed scientists as “pipe-smoking oddities having unruly hair and wearing baggy tweed jackets with leather patches on our elbows.”

But after succeeding in flight school, survival school, underwater school and more, NASA began to see the eight men differently.

England said the growth came from dedicated effort, one that was managed through thinking of his astronaut goal as a series of small steps — “a purposeful walk in a desired direction,” much like the educational journey the recent graduates just took.

“Each semester and each problem you solved moved you incrementally closer to the goal of understanding, filling your toolbox of professional skills and graduating,” England said.

“NASA did the same with the Apollo scientist astronauts. And the scientist astronauts must have convinced NASA that scientists and engineers were neither as fragile nor as inept at space adventures as they had anticipated. The added time and respect afforded civilians in the astronaut office has allowed new scientist astronauts and engineers to grow in their specialties, creating a more rich intellectual environment.”

New graduates — listening in earnest to England — clapped and cheered for his contributions and advice. Many of them had customized graduation caps with sayings: “Follow your dreams, they know the way,” “Teaching is a work of heart,” and “Wherever life plants you, bloom with grace.”

In his authoritative newscaster voice, Communication Associate Professor Tim Kiska, who served as Master of Ceremonies, introduced additional commencement speakers, including College of Business alumnus David Knezek, Board of Regents member Paul Brown, and student speaker Jacquelene Hollier-Jackson.

Surrounded by maize and blue ceremonial items — along with poster-sized photos of her, held up by her family — Hollier-Jackson said it’s important to celebrate the new degrees earned. But it’s also essential to realize it’s not the finish line.

“Today signifies the day that we accept our call to action,” she said. “The call to go out into the world and become leaders of our world — the leaders our world needs to change the lives of the next generation. This is not the end. Instead, it’s a new beginning.”

Looking out into the crowd — filled with both new and familiar faces — Hollier-Jackson said she was living a moment she’s envisioned since a child at family graduations.

“I remember people who were finishing school and giving powerful speeches and thinking, ‘I want to do that.’ Humbly I stand on this stage not for myself but for my little cousins, your little cousins, daughters, sons, nieces and nephews who are thinking of their futures and will now think, ‘I want to do that,’” she said. “You never know who is watching you and you never know who you’ll inspire. So always remember to make the best of every moment.”

Sunday’s ceremony included recognition of six students who were honored as Chancellor’s Medallion recipients for their academic accomplishments, quality of character, intellect and integrity:

Retired Mathematics Faculty Helen Santiz has walked in silence across the bridge in Selma, Ala, to remember the peaceful Civil Rights demonstrators who were met with violence. She’s visited the Lorraine Motel in Tennessee where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968. And she’s listened to the recording of King’s March 14, 1968 speech to Grosse Pointe residents, which is now considered the precursor to his “I Have a Dream” speech. But prior to doing any of this, she served on the first ��-Dearborn’s Martin Luther King Day of Service planning committee nearly 30 years ago. And she’s participated in every one since.

Mathematics Professor Emeritus Helen Santiz is a founding committee member of the MLK Day of Service and the last remaining active member from the original planning group.

Santiz observed that the event teaches what Dr. King stood for. It reminds us to pay attention and to not forget about our nation's ugly history. And it's important to get involved so we can do better as a community. “I didn’t know how to get involved in his legacy until I joined the committee; once I did, it encouraged me to find other ways to learn about Dr. King. It all started here at ��-Dearborn.”

Now 80, Santiz is still very involved in ��-Dearborn's MLK Day of Service, continuously greeting volunteers and giving directions. She said it’s encouraging to see the steady stream of people filtering down the University Center hallway.

“(Former) Chancellor Blenda Wilson had the vision for this day. We weren’t sure if it would last beyond that first year — there was a blizzard and 12 inches of snow on the ground,” Santiz said. “But people showed up to do it again the next year. And it continued to grow. I’m confident that the event is here to stay.”

Now in its 27th year, more than 400 volunteers gathered in Kochoff Hall early Monday morning before heading out to one of the 21 MLK Day of Service sites, which ranged from food bank stocking at Gleaners to organizing clothing for a veteran’s thrift store. See photos from the 2020 event.

At the MLK Week Kickoff event, Chancellor Domenico Grasso welcomed the large crowd and had the group read a quote from King on the back of MLK Day of Service T-shirts: There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.

“We are all faced with difficult decisions. It can be easy to go with the flow, but sometimes you have to step out of the flow and do what’s right,” Grasso said. “That’s what’s embodied in all of the work that Dr. Martin Luther King did. And I feel that it’s what distinguishes our campus. People around the country are taking the day off and you are here to do something for others.”

As staff from ��-Dearborn and Henry Ford College — the campus’ co-partner in the event — checked in volunteers, a line of T-shirts hung above the crowd. They were from all of the previous MLK Days of Service; the 2020 shirt will join them soon. It’s been put aside to go up on the wall after the event.

Retired staff Karen Holland has a bit of inside information about that display: Most of them once belonged to her and Santiz. “When we were doing this event for about 20 years, we thought it would be nice to display the shirts in a permanent way — it worked out that between Helen and I, we had shirts that we kept that would cover all of the years,” said Holland, who also serves on the MLK Planning Committee and has volunteered every year since the first one. “Don’t ever take them out of the frames — they are hung strategically because they are used and there might be some paint on some of those.”

Retired staff member Karen Holland has volunteered for the MLK Day of Service since it began; most of the MLK Day of Service T-shirts from the early years of the event on display in the University Center are hers.

Chatting with a student before the kickoff event Monday, Santiz was asked if he’d see her at the Capuchin Community Service Center, the site where he was volunteering. When she remarked being too old for the labor involved there, the student replied, “You don’t look old and any age is the perfect age to volunteer.”

As the night sky became pink with the sunrise, Santiz lit up too. But it wasn’t because of the age compliment, she liked his view on community service.

Student Affairs Assistant Director Kristine Day’s University Center office is a Grand Central Station of sorts.

Students lean into Kris’s open office door to chat about work and life. ��-Dearborn alumni reach out to let Kris — who’s been with the university for 20 years — know about their upcoming weddings, jobs and expanding families. Staff voices are heard talking with her over Zoom chats when planning ��-Dearborn events and programs.

And, when Kris isn’t in her office, you’ll find her front and center at the University Center’s Information Desk training work study students or taking MCard photos of new Wolverines. She acts in a mentor role on a daily basis, supervising nearly 50 students on University Unions & Events operations and information center teams. Kris is also in charge of the campus’ weekly student newsletter, a publication that goes out every Sunday between 6 and 7 p.m. “We wanted to consolidate all upcoming important campus information in one place instead of students getting five or six separate emails from different departments or offices. It’s had incredible readership.”

She’s busy, but always enjoys catching up with her students and campus colleagues because a sense of community is core to who she is. Talking with Kris recently, she shared lessons she’s learned from family, her colleagues and experience.

Your roots don’t define you, but they do help shape you.

“I grew up on our family farm in Lenawee County. The farm had been in our family for generations — since the state of Michigan was settled. When I was young, there were cattle. Later, my family decided to just focus on cash crops like corn, soybeans and wheat. There’s a lot to be said about growing up on a farm in a small town. You learn a strong sense of community and see how interconnected we are to each other. Sure, everyone knows everyone’s business... which isn’t always ideal. But, if you need help, all you have to do is put out the call and people will respond.

In addition to a farming history, my family has generations of educators. My mom was a teacher. My grandma was a teacher in the rural one-room schoolhouse. I was convinced that I wasn’t going to work in education like them. I was going to do something different. But, through my experiences, I saw why they wanted to work in education. You feel like you make a difference. It might be small, but what you do could create a spark that lights a path in someone’s future.

I loved living on that farm. The family sold it last year and I was sad to see it go. I learned so much while growing up there. In a way, it will always be with me.”

Be open to a change in plans.

“I’ve always liked animals. So when I first started college as an undergraduate, my intention was to work in animal communication, like how people use sign language with primates.

I was someone who had to work to make ends meet in college and I got a work study job on campus in the student activities office. I had no idea how much that job would impact my life. It changed everything for me. I learned how much fun it was to see something you put together from beginning to end come to life, especially when it’s meaningful for students. I was totally energized from it. In the four years I worked in student activities, we created programs, ran programs and did all the behind-the-scenes work. You can even say I have a bit of roadie experience because I rolled up cords and helped pack up after putting on concerts by headliners like Gwen Stefani, Ziggy Marley and Harry Connick Jr. My work study boss and mentor noticed my love for student activities and encouraged me to go graduate school.

That wasn’t my plan at the beginning, but it was absolutely the right path for me. It’s kind of come full circle. Now I work with campus’ work study students. I’ve been on campus since October 2001 and I still love what I do.”

��-Dearborn gives the opportunity to create campus experiences you want to see.

“As we know, ��-Dearborn is a commuter campus. Even though students don’t live directly on campus, they are still very invested in what happens here. They want fun activities, safe spaces, engaging events, speakers who make you think, and programs that bring people together. We want to make sure that our students have the experiences that will holistically make them more prepared for whatever their next life step is. I learned during my time here that leadership is very open to new ideas. If you notice there is something missing for our students, have an idea on how to bridge that gap and want to take responsibility for it, there’s often an opportunity to create it.

That’s how Homecoming happened on our campus. About a decade ago, students shared with me that they wanted to celebrate their campus and school spirit. We created a week-long series of Homecoming events that now has evolved into a tradition here. The Alternative Spring Break program and Volunteer Center on our campus started this way too. If you are a student who wants to bring something new to campus, let us know. Sharing an idea is the first step in making something happen.”

Leave things better than you’ve found them.

“My dad was big on telling us to leave things better than you’ve found them. That’s a big thought, but it really comes down to simple everyday things. It can be picking up garbage that you see and putting it in the trash can. It can be having a positive attitude and a smile when you are meeting with someone. It can be creating something new or strengthening what already exists. What you do is up to you. If it has an impact, no matter how small, you are doing something right.”
