The mission of the Mitchell Business Communication Lab is to help each student become a thoughtful writer and speaker. Students will learn to approach their audience in a clear, concise and correct way.  Our consultants are ready to help writers during any part of the creative process, regardless of format or genre.

The Mitchell Business Communication Lab at the College of Business provides business communication consultation to help students further develop their written communication skills, which will enhance their professional presence. 

  • The Lab offers trained and experienced consultants from the College of Business.  
  • Consultants are available to work with students one-on-one, or with a small group.
  • Both graduate and undergraduate students are welcome.  
  • We can help with class assignments and deliverables, resumes, oral presentations, slide decks, visuals and graphic communications, etc.

Communication Consultation Appointments

We encourage you to come at any stage in the writing process, so you may not have much to bring with you! See which of the following might pertain to you and your writing project and bring it along:

  1. Your writing project, on paper or digital.
  2. Prompt or writing assignment.
  3. Rubric, if available.
  4. Instructor's (or peer鈥檚) comments or assessment.
  5. Goals for your writing and questions you have about the project.

Once we have your registration on file, you can make all of your appointments online. When you're signed in, select the type of appointment you wish to schedule from the drop down menu: virtual or in-person.

All students should note that they are allowed only one (1) missed appointment per semester. Upon your second (2nd) missed appointment, you will be automatically blocked from making appointments online. You may request your account be reinstated by emailing the MBCL at [email protected]

Kennedy Reed

Kennedy Reed

Kennedy Reed is a Marketing and Journalism student in her fourth year at the university. She enjoys music, writing, and fashion. She is working towards a career in fashion marketing and plans on getting her MBA after undergrad.

Aaminh Elhajras

Aaminh is a fourth-year Supply Chain major at the University of Michigan Dearborn and an experienced writer. She is passionate about creating a welcoming, collaborative learning environment where students can become more confident in their writing. She is enthusiastic about helping others while continuing to grow and learn from each other. When she is not working or at school, she spends her time listening to music, drawing, and playing sports.

Director

Jennifer Coon is the Director of the Mitchell Business Communications Lab and faculty in the Management Studies department of the College of Business. She has taught college-level rhetoric and research writing for several decades, as well as English language learners of all ages. Her research includes distance learning for writers, effective feedback, revision and ethnographic research.

The Donor Gift from the Patricia W. Mitchell Trust

In 2021, The College of Business at the University of Michigan-Dearborn received $250,000 in support from the Patricia W. Mitchell Trust that will support the Business Communication Lab. The lab was named the John H. and Patricia W. Mitchell Business Communication Lab to honor the legacy of Columbia Pictures Television Founder John H. Mitchell (A.B. '39, 萝莉社-Ann Arbor) and his wife, Patricia Mitchell.
