Summer 2024 - MiVideo/Kaltura Updates

Dear Colleague,

We are writing to let you know about a recent update to MiVideo/Kaltura, the video system on Canvas, that may impact your Fall course. The new video player meets accessibility requirements, especially for those who require text transcripts. We made the switch to the new version at the end of June, which should allow faculty teaching in Fall ample time to correct any issues with their course videos. Please see the Q&A below for more information.

What changed?

The video system players for MiVideo/Kaltura were upgraded, as required by the vendor.

What happened when the system was upgraded?

Based on information from those teaching in Summer II, we believe (and sincerely hope!) that most faculty will not notice this change has taken place. If you chose a video size when you embedded videos in a Canvas page or if you requested a transcript, your video may not automatically load correctly in your Canvas pages, quizzes, or assignments for your course.

My videos have not loaded correctly - what should I do?

If your MiVideo/Kaltura videos are not showing up as they should on your course pages, assignments, or other areas of Canvas, you will need to re-embed them by editing the Canvas content, clicking on the non-functional video area and deleting it, then clicking on the Kaltura Media button, finding the proper video and clicking the embed button next to it. If you need assistance, you can contact Chris Casey, [email protected].

We apologize for this inconvenience and sincerely hope that you are minimally impacted. If you experience any issues with this upgrade, please feel free to

Please reach out if you have any questions. All the best,

Joan and Chris
