Through determination and a campus support system he eventually discovered, Beverly found his way.

The new director of the Student Advising Resource Team (START)—a new campus-wide advising office—said he would have liked to have had ������-Dearborn’s START initiative to guide him through his first years of higher education.

The START office, which opens this fall in the University Center, will help students identify a path to graduation, provide the tools and knowledge to amend and change this plan, and ultimately give the confidence and skills to take ownership over course selection, Beverly said.

“I do wish I had an initiative like this when I was a student because I felt lost as far as academic advising was concerned. I did not know where to begin with advising,” said Beverly, who started on campus May 2. “Navigating college is not an easy task. My job is to help students gain access to information and help them understand how to use that information to succeed in college and beyond.”

Beverly, who previously worked at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York and Cal Poly Pomona in California, said he wanted to make the move to ������-Dearborn because of the friendly campus atmosphere, strong history of co-ops and internships, and new student-focused initiatives.

“Dearborn has a focus on student learning and this is something that is important to me,” said Beverly. “Working in academic advising, I have a unique opportunity to assist people in advancing themselves. As students learn and grow there is a lot of excitement, and I’ll get to be a part of this experience with each and every student that visits START for advising.”
