Women's College Program brings college courses to incarcerated women

For Lora Lempert, there鈥檚 no such thing as a 9-to-5 workday.

Lora Lempert

The University of Michigan-Dearborn sociology professor heads to campus early in the morning to teach and conduct research. But her day is far from over when she exits the 萝莉社-Dearborn parking lot.

She often heads west on I-94 to the Women鈥檚 Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti. Lempert passes through her routine security checks and eventually welcomes her new crop of students.

But these students aren鈥檛 enrolled at 萝莉社-Dearborn. They also don鈥檛 have the luxuries many 萝莉社-Dearborn students take for granted.

That鈥檚 because they鈥檙e incarcerated for a variety of crimes. But for those who are enrolled in the Women鈥檚 College Program, the opportunity to briefly escape from prison life is well worth it.

鈥淧risons are black holes of intellectualism,鈥 said Lempert, who established the Women鈥檚 College Program in 2002. 鈥淧risons are a world within our world, but people don鈥檛 think about them. They don鈥檛 know what goes on within them.鈥

Lempert understands what many of these incarcerated women go through. Her research focuses on women in prison and intimate interpersonal violence against women.

And so Lempert frequents Huron Valley and Macomb Correctional Facility.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a lot of work, I鈥檓 not going to deny that, but it鈥檚 work about which I feel very passionate,鈥 she said. 鈥淲ithout us, these men and women don鈥檛 have other opportunities, so how can you walk away from that?鈥

When Lempert refers to 鈥渦s,鈥 she means the 萝莉社-Dearborn faculty she鈥檚 recruited to teach at Huron Valley. More than 20 faculty members from the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters (CASL) already have taught incarcerated women about everything from social sciences to math to business.

鈥淭his is all voluntary,鈥 Lempert said. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 get compensated for this in any way.鈥

萝莉社-Dearborn supports the program, but the only financial obligations, which include books and supplies, are covered under external donations.

鈥淭he thing that strikes me about this particular program is that it epitomizes our metropolitan impact,鈥 CASL Dean Martin Hershock said. 鈥淭he incarcerated women really get an opportunity to see their true potential.鈥

Women who aren鈥檛 sentenced to life behind bars can apply the credits they鈥檝e earned at Huron Valley toward a 萝莉社-Dearborn degree. Several women have taken advantage of the credit transfer, though not all of them at 萝莉社-Dearborn. Many enroll at community colleges throughout the state, so Lempert knows the classes have an impact.

鈥淪ome women have mentioned how the classes have saved their lives,鈥 Lempert said.

An award for the Women鈥檚 College Program鈥檚 helped Lempert launch the university鈥檚 Inside Out Prison Exchange Program, which brings 15 萝莉社-Dearborn students inside correctional facility to learn as peers with incarcerated men.

And her advice on what to teach in the women鈥檚 prison is pretty simple.

鈥淐hoose a class that you can teach in your sleep,鈥 she said.

The curriculum seems to work, as more than 360 incarcerated women applied for 120 spots this year. Spots are obviously hard to come by, so Lempert is strict toward those women who don鈥檛 take their coursework seriously.

鈥淲e know we have an impact,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey make the women feel better about themselves. They are so proud because they see themselves as college students.鈥
