Provost Announcement (April 25, 2022)
Dear Colleagues,
After a rigorous and community-informed search, I am pleased to announce Dr. Gabriella Scarlatta as 蹤獲扦-Dearborns new provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. Gabriellas tenure as interim provost has been admirable, especially in leading our academic faculty and staff as we returned to campus this past academic year. Her commitment to listening and active communication has bolstered and empowered our pandemic response. She is an authentic believer of the Mission First - People Always philosophy that has served us well. Gabriella has helped make significant strides with our strategic planning priorities and has ensured the Office of the Provost is a collaborative partner for the colleges and units. In short, she was the best choice to continue leading the Provosts Office. I thank the search committee for the thoroughness of their work.
Her official appointment will begin July 1, 2022, pending regental approval.
Prior to serving as interim provost, Gabriella was an associate dean in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters and the director of the French Studies Program.
Working with undergraduates and taking part in numerous university service activities, her long career at 蹤獲扦-Dearborn has been marked with distinction. Gabriella joined 蹤獲扦-Dearborn in 1996 as adjunct faculty and in 1998 as an assistant professor. She was promoted to professor of French, with tenure, in 2017. She has been co-chair of the Humanities Department and a chair of the Department of Language, Culture, and Communication, a member of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters Executive and Curriculum Committees, and a member of the Faculty Senate. Gabriella received the Women and Genders Studies Outstanding Research Award in 2013, was an honoree of the Council on Global Engagement from 蹤獲扦-Ann Arbor in 2012, and won the Womens Studies Outstanding Research Award in 2004. She teaches French literature and culture and has published several books and scholarly articles about the French and Italian Renaissance and early women writers.
Gabriella received her B.A. and the Ma簾trise in Modern Languages from the Universit矇 de Savoie, Chamb矇ry, France. She earned her M.A. in French and Italian Literatures and her Ph.D. in Modern Languages from Wayne State University.
As provost, Gabriella will continue to guide and lead matters of great importance such as continuing our exemplary approach to campus health and safety, advancing our strategic enrollment management planning process, fostering a 21st-century commuter campus, and realizing additional aspects of the Go Blueprint for Success plan.
I look forward to continuing to partner with Gabriella, as we lead the university to new heights. Please help me congratulate her on her appointment.
