ÂÜÀòÉç-Dearborn Response to and Compliance with recent Federal Law, Executive Orders, and Guidelines Students (February 24, 2025)
Dear Students,
In light of several recent orders from the federal government pertaining to higher education and other areas that impact our community, I wanted to share some updates on the ways we are ensuring ÂÜÀòÉç-Dearborn remains safe and welcoming, while adhering to all aspects of federal law.
Well over a year ago, I announced the creation of the Office of Holistic Excellence. This office is charged with amplifying our commitment to building a welcoming and inclusive culture at ÂÜÀòÉç-Dearborn. Its efforts emphasize the importance of diversity of thought and intellectual empathy as they relate to student success and building a caring community.
OHE will remain at the forefront of fostering an inclusive environment where all students, faculty and staff feel a sense of belonging and flourish. It will continue to support the free expression of diverse thoughts and viewpoints, as well as encourage open and respectful dialogue. To be clear, the office’s efforts will also adhere to all applicable, appropriate and relevant federal laws. It is my sincere hope that it becomes a national model for the future.
Below are some of the steps we have taken more recently to ensure that we are compliant in the changing legal landscape, while remaining true to our educational mission and, simultaneously, upholding our values, character and sense of community.
- We have reviewed all our academic programs and are confident they are in compliance with federal guidelines.
- We will continue our long-standing practice of not requiring standardized test scores for admission.
- Our student organizations are open to all students and are not impacted by any recent changes to federal law.
I understand that the wide scope of federal action over the last five weeks may be unsettling and could cause confusion and concern. During these uncertain times, I encourage all of us to remain calm, retain our Michigan poise and dignity, and continue to look for ways to strengthen our welcoming campus culture. ÂÜÀòÉç-Dearborn will continue to be a university of opportunity for everyone, and a safe and welcoming place to study, explore and work.
