Dear Colleagues,

The University has issued on how to keep your technology safe (and keep University, research, and personal information safe) while traveling internationally. Travelers are strongly urged to review and heed this advice.

In summary, take only the electronic devices you absolutely need on your international trip, and minimize or remove any University or personal information on those devices. 

This renewed and expanded travel guidance includes:

  • Contact the for a loaner laptop before traveling and store only the data you absolutely need on the laptop; if possible, keep all sensitive personal information and U-M data off the device
  • Log out of personal and U-M cloud services, such as Gmail, on all devices including laptops and phones
  • Disable biometric (FaceID, fingerprint) unlock options and use passcodes instead
  • Take special care when (into a foreign country or back into the US)
