CASL LEO Faculty Workload Effective Fall 2024

LEO Faculty Workload

Workload in CASL is determined by the whole number of teaching credit hours. Teaching workload effort includes but is not limited to virtual and/or in person classroom time, preparatory course work, grading, assessment, timely communication with students, holding office hours, and writing recommendation letters. For courses where the lecturer is not the sole instructor of record, the effort assignment will be prorated accordingly and clearly defined in any offer contract or teaching assignment letters.

The standard workload for a lecturer of any rank for a 100% appointment is a teaching load of twelve (12) credits each of the fall and winter semesters, attained by teaching a combination of 2,3, and 4-credit courses in each of those semesters. For example, four 3-credit courses yield a full time appointment. Appointments at less than 100% will carry a reduced workload effort. For example, one 2-credit course and one 4-credit course yield a half time or 50% appointment. Another example is three 3-credit courses yield a 75% appointment.

With the 4-credit transition, due to the combination of 3 and 4 credit courses in the CASL curriculum, it can be difficult to assign exactly 12 credits in a semester. Due to this, a Lecturer faculty member may be assigned with in a single semester four (4) courses that sum up to 13 or 14 credits. In these instances, the additional effort above the standard 100% workload of 12 credits will be addressed through one of the following actions:

  1. The Lecturer faculty member will be compensated for an overload in that semester for the additional 1 or 2 credits above the 12 credit 100% workload in a single semester. The effort attributed to the overload will either be 8.33% for a 1-credit overload or 16.66% for a 2-credit overload. These overloads will only require the approval of the department chair, except for Adjunct Lecturers (i.e., those with regular, non-instructional titles at 50% or greater that are interdependent and not separate), which will also require approval of the dean and provost.

  2. Lecturer IIIs and IVs may, with approval of the department chair, have their effort balanced within a single academic year (fall and winter), if balancing can be done within four (4) credits difference between fall and winter semester (e.g., 10 credits in fall and 14 credits in winter). The balancing of credits must be described in the Lecturer’s appointment letter.

LEO III and IV appointments include service responsibilities in lieu of teaching some credits and are clearly defined on an annual basis. The department executive committees assess the credit hour equivalency of the service activity and adjust the teaching load accordingly. Some units do not have LEC IIIs or LEC IVs.

Service responsibilities for Lecturers IIIs and IVs may include but are not limited to:

  • Assist TT colleagues in redesigning curriculum and/or courses
  • Committee work (CASL exec, search, etc.)
  • Course chairs (write labs, exercises, and provide assessment for all sections of a course)
  • Course Scheduling
  • Developing new course modalities
  • Director of academic/learning labs, programs, centers
