LEO Teaching Professor Review Guidelines and Criteria

The Teaching Professor title is a recognition after many years of work and service. Per the 2021-2024蹤獲扦-LEO Agreement Memorandum of Understanding #8 Teaching Professor (pgs. 183-185), effective September 1, 2022, Employees who reach or have reached their first Continuing Review in their appointment will have the ability to elect consideration for a working title of Teaching Professor. The successful attainment of the Teaching Professor working title does not imply any financial change. The title of Lecturer II or IV will be retained per the definitions and review schedule in Article XI.B and for any other administrative purposes based on Employee classification

  • Criteria

    o Must be a Lecturer II or IV in good standing and are at or have completed their first Continuing Review. [Typically 12 years]

    o An Employee who requests consideration for Teaching Professor will still be required to meet all of the review criteria for a Continuing Review of a lecturer under Article XIX.E of the 蹤獲扦-LEO Agreement

    o Must be able to demonstrate excellence including but not limited to the following areas:

    • Growth and advancement of the Employees empirical, conceptual, and procedural knowledge relevant to the subject areas in which they provide instruction.
      • What innovations has the individual made to their teaching method over the years?
      • How is this growth demonstrated in their courses and syllabi?
      • Do they demonstrate the ability for continued growth and innovation in their knowledge of their subject area?
    • Evidence that the Employee has evaluated and improved methods of instruction and shown high teaching standards;
      • How has the individuals theoretical approach to pedagogy grown over the course of their time as an instructor?
      • How has the individuals practical application of the delivery of instruction evolved?
      • Does the individual demonstrate that they are attentive to pedagogy and are able to express how they evaluate pedagogy in order to continue to improve?
    • Inclusive Teaching: How have they worked to incorporate into their instruction inclusive teaching methods, and what work have they done in the instructional setting to advance the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion mission of the University.
      • How has the individual contributed to the overall teaching mission of the university?
      • What steps have they taken to advance the universitys DEI mission?
      • Can they demonstrate how this work has been incorporated into their instruction?
    • May provide additional support in the following areas:
      • Participating in activities or programs to advance the mission of the university, support their unit, or improve the culture of the learning environment.
      • Improvement, growth, or advancement in their administrative or service duties if such duties are a part of their appointment.
  • Process
    • Lecturers who meet the criteria outlined above can initiate the process upon their Continuing Review notification sent by the academic units by August
    • Within five (5) business days of receiving their Continuing Review notification, the Lecturer can submit a written request via email to their department chair indicating their consideration for the title
    • Lecturers submit their standard Continuing Review materials based upon the academic units criteria guidelines
    • Lecturers are to include in their Continuing Review materials a letter (no more than two pages) to address each area how they met the Teaching Professor criteria stated above
    • The academic unit will conduct the Continuing Review in accordance with their review criteria guidelines
    • If supported by the discipline/department, the department chair will route the nomination to the Deans Office.
    • If supported by the Dean, the Deans Office will route the nomination to the Provosts Office
    • The academic unit will notify the Deans Office of the Lecturers who are not selected
    • Lecturers will be notified the outcome from the Deans Office by March 31st of the academic year
    • Lecturers not selected will receive notification and a brief explanation from the academic unit
