Individual counseling provides an opportunity to talk with an objective, caring professional about your concerns or problems using a solution focused approach. Concerns range widely, but might include feelings of low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, academic concerns, identity issues, issues with friends and family, or relationship concerns. Counseling sessions last 45-50 minutes. All services are free and confidential. Group therapy is just as effective as individual therapy, and for some, group therapy is actually the ideal treatment. Many students would benefit from learning more skills they could use to assist in their daily life. CAPS offers several different groups each semester to help meet these needs. Some examples of previous groups include: 

Interpersonal Therapy Group- A meaningful way to receive multiple perspectives, encouragement, feedback and learn how to relate to others is a safe space. 

Coping Skills Therapy Group- This group provides an opportunity to learn about a variety of tools to aid in coping with different life stressors. Several strategies will be discussed and explored, including mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, cognitive diffusion, interpersonal effectiveness, values clarification, and committed actions toward valued living.

Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity (SOGI) Therapy Group- This therapy group will address life and relational issues related to romantic and sexual attraction, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Topics are based on student interests and may include: exploring identity & identity development; trust and connections; dealing with heterosexism, cissexism, internalized homophobia and/or transphobia; dating and dating technology; attraction
and romance; family dynamics; faith and identity; balancing academics with life; and intersectional
identities.

Why do people join group therapy?
People join group therapy because they are having difficulties and benefit from the support of caring peers. Common issues include:

•  Family problems
•  Relationship issues
•  Anxiety
•  Depression
•  Loneliness

How does group therapy work?
Group members discuss issues that are of concern to them and offer each other support and feedback. Group therapy works for many reasons including:

• Group members give feedback and support.
• Group members offer suggestions for alternative ways of acting.
• Group encourages members to practice new options.

How do I get the most out of group therapy? Most people are apprehensive about joining a group and experience some initial anxiety. To make group more meaningful and healing:

• Participate and attend group regularly.
• Decide what to work on in group and work actively towards change.
• Express your thoughts and feelings.
• Give others feedback.
• Be patient with yourself and the group - it will take time to grow comfortable and develop trust with the group.
• Try new behaviors suggested in group and ask for feedback from others.

When and How do I join? 

Just email us at [email protected] and let us know which group you are interested in joining. The groups we are currently offering can be found under the "workshops and programs" tab of our website. We will have you complete a brief screening and then provide you with the information to join. If you are already in individual counseling at CAPS, just talk to your counselor about your interest!

If you need to speak with a mental health clinician immediately between 8am-5pm Monday - Friday please either call us at 313-593-5430 or come to the Renick University Center 2157 and ask to speak to a clinician.  

After Hours Crisis Phone: CAPS provides after hours phone services to students in need. To reach a licensed mental health clinician after 5pm, during weekends, or during an university closure, please call 313-593-5430 and press 2 when prompted.

Students receiving counseling services at CAPS that have questions about their diagnosis or are experiencing learning challenges, or attention and concentration difficulties may be eligible for an assessment to provide recommendations for possible accommodations. Please talk with your clinician about your concerns so we can help determine whether an assessment would be helpful. 

Students receiving counseling services at CAPS may be eligible for psychiatric services if medication may be helpful and they do not have access to psychiatric services elsewhere. Please speak with your clinician if you have questions about obtaining a psychiatric consult and meet one of the below qualifiers. 

• Using insurance will cause family/interpersonal issues
• Under insured 

For students who do not meet one of the two conditions, CAPS will still assist with helping you get connected to psychiatric services.
