Summer term is considered the end of the academic year. After you have registered and finalized your schedule, submit the summer aid application. The amount of aid that a student is eligible for during the summer term depends on how much was used during the fall and winter semesters. Students must have a  on file to be considered for grants and loans.

The application will be available beginning March 27, 2025.

Summer Aid Disbursements and Deadlines

*Federal Loans will not disburse until students have started attending at least half-time coursework (6 credits as an undergraduate and 4 credits as a graduate student).

If you are enrolled in three credits for Summer I and three credits for Summer II, loans will not disburse until June 26, 2025. No late fees or holds will be applied to your account as a result of this.

Enrollment Requirements

Carefully consider the courses you decide on for the summer term. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships is required to monitor changes in enrollment. Changes in your enrollment may impact your aid eligibility. If you drop a course and your instructor does not confirm that you attended the course, your aid will be reduced or canceled.

We encourage students to contact our office to discuss how dropping a course may impact their financial aid. If you withdraw from all courses without notifying our office that you will attend a future course, you will be subject to reduction and/or cancellation of any unearned aid.

Study Abroad

If you plan to study abroad in the Summer, please submit the Study Abroad Aid Application via MNavigator, instead of this application.

Students who wish to study abroad may potentially use federal student aid, university scholarships, private scholarships and loans to meet some or all of the educationally-related costs. It is strongly recommended that students begin the financial aid process at least three months before the program of study begins.

Students who are NOT applying for their trip via M-Navigator should schedule an appointment with a Financial Aid Advisor via their MyÂÜÀòÉçDearborn student portal to discuss specific requirements for financial aid eligibility.

Award Eligibility Requirements

Federal PELL Grant

The Federal PELL Grant is available to eligible students enrolled in any number of credits for the summer semester.

Below are examples of students with a negative to zero SAI who have not yet reached their lifetime eligibility limit and are otherwise eligible for the PELL Grant.

Scholarships

Students are encouraged to continue their scholarship search year round. See our Scholarship Tips for more information on continuing your external scholarship search.

Students who would like to use a full semester of eligibility of their University Scholarship for the Summer term should indicate this on the Summer Aid Application. Using your University Scholarship in the summer has its benefits. Students are encouraged to review the terms and conditions of your award before utilizing this option.

*Please note that full-time enrollment in the Summer is the same as in Fall or Winter (12 credits), but it can be split over the terms available  between May and August. For example, you can take six credits in Summer 1, three credits over the whole summer, and three credits during Summer 2 and you will have been enrolled full-time.

Federal Loans

Loan eligibility is based on your class level and dependency status, as well as how much loan funding you used in the fall and winter terms

Satisfactory Academic Progress

Students must make satisfactory academic progress toward completion of a degree in order to remain eligible for financial aid. Federal regulations require the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships to monitor the progress of each student toward their degree completion. Students who fall behind in their coursework or who fail to achieve minimum standards for grade point average and completion of classes may lose their eligibility for all types of federal, state, and university aid. If so, eligibility may be reinstated upon approval of a SAP Appeal via StudentForms.

Other Important Information

Audited Courses & Additive Credit (non-remedial) - These courses are not eligible for financial aid and don't count towards financial aid enrollment hours.                                                                                                                                                                                     

Repeated Courses - A course completed successfully may only be covered by financial aid for one additional attempt.

Participation is important - In order to be eligible for Federal aid, you must demonstrate participation by receiving a passing grade. If you drop a course, or receive a failing grade, your instructor will be asked to verify your participation in class. If you fail to participate in class, your aid could be adjusted. This may result in a balance owed to the University.
